What's Your Goal?
A few years ago, I came up with the idea for the Dizzy Dash after walking my first virtual 5k for the United Way. I thought, what a great way to raise money for VEDA and give back to the vestibular community!
Nearly 4 years ago, my life changed forever. Very unexpectedly, I was diagnosed with vestibular neuritis. I couldn’t stand long enough to make myself some eggs. I couldn’t drive. I couldn’t work. Just taking a shower was terrifying. Once I started physical therapy, my PT told me that the best thing I could do to get better was to walk. I began walking our dog Heidi twice daily. At first I couldn’t go very far. Heidi was used to longer walks, and I just couldn’t do it. After a few days, though, I was able to go a little further. And after a few more days a little further still. Now I am walking 5 miles, and Heidi is very happy.
VEDA has done so much to help me since my condition began. I had no idea what a vestibular disorder was, let alone what causes it, what to expect, or how to live with it. VEDA has helped me learn all of these things, as well as educate friends, family, and healthcare professionals about exactly what is going on with me. The Dizzy Dash is my way of helping to give back to VEDA for all that VEDA has given me.
My original idea for the Dizzy Dash was simply to get people moving. It didn’t have to be a run—it could be a walk, a stroll, or a crawl. Whatever a person could do. And it didn’t have to be all at once. If all you could do one day was get to the end of the driveway, that was okay! Try to get a little further tomorrow. A 5K (3.1 miles) is out of reach for a lot of people with these conditions. Our new focus is still to get people moving, but based on a goal of their choosing. If you can barely get to the end of your driveway, make your goal getting to the end of your neighbor’s driveway by May 20. If you can only drive to the corner store, try to make a goal of driving a little further.
