Salutations! My name is Joshua Huppert and I'm currently a graduate student in Audiology at Pacific University in Hillsboro, OR. While several aspects of audiology interest me, I can't help but shake the fact that I hold a very special place in my heart for vestibular patients. Not only are the patients some of the bravest people I've ever met, but I too find the challenge of differential diagnosis within the world of vestibular disorders quite exhilarating-It's like professional puzzle-solving!
In the Fall of 2014, I was approached by the Vestibular Disorders Association to co-lead the support group for individuals currently living with vestibular disorders here in Portland. Co-leading the VEDA support group has been the opportunity of a lifetime and further amplified my passion for working the vestibular population as I have been given a rare chance to step away from the academic and medical side of the field and simply just listen to individuals who actually live what we read and learn about daily. I have been humbled by this “art of listening” and poignantly reminded that every patient has a story to share and this story is not orchestrated or defined by his or her pathology, but instead, by his or her life experience.
Upon graduating from Pacific University with my Doctorate in Audiology in August of 2017, I hope to specialize in working vestibular and balance patients and join in the fight to help defeat dizziness!
Balance Awareness Week (“BAW”) is VEDA’s signature annual event whose purpose is to raise public awareness about vestibular disorders. Their goal is to “Defeat Dizziness™” by encouraging people who have experienced symptoms like dizziness or vertigo to become informed about their condition and seek help from a vestibular specialist. By increasing awareness we aim to reduce the time it takes patients to receive a diagnosis and put them on the road to recovery.
This year, VEDA celebrates its 19th Annual Balance Awareness Week which takes place from September 14 – 20. Please join me in supporting VEDA’s mission.
