My Story

Hi, my name is David and I’m joining the Vestibular Disorders Association (VEDA) to help raise awareness about the challenges of living with a vestibular disorder.

Vestibular disorders affect millions of people each year, often in debilitating ways. Dizziness, vertigo, and ringing in the ears are just some of the symptoms of a vestibular disorder, and while some people recover, others suffer to some degree their entire lives. I bet there is someone right now, maybe a coworker, or family member, or a friend that is suffering from this disorder and chances are you don't even know it. That's why it's sometimes referred to as an invisible disease.

For my personnel story my vestibular disorder started about four years ago after complications of a left brain stem stroke. It left me with constant dizziness, balance  and vision problems. Although I am no longer able to work a traditional job, I spend my days volunteering for a number of organizations. For this organization I am currently a board member of the patient education committee, a member of the new member welcoming committee and I am the inaugural Board Chairperson of the recently formed VEDA Ambassador Board, a grassroots campaign to help create awareness of vestibular disorders locally as well as nationally. I also run a local support group.

I know all too well that's it's very hard to raise money for non profit organizations, there are lots of them out there and they all do great work. Today I am unveiling my "Gimme Five" program. I am only asking for a small donation of five dollars, if you can give more, that is great also. For about the price of your morning coffee you can help make a difference. In addition to this I will be doing something that I have never accomplished in my life, finish a 5K walk. You may ask why is that so important? The answer is for most people who suffer a vestibular disorder the one thing that they wish for is to have their old life back. By doing something that I haven't accomplished in my previous life, it will hopefully give hope to me and all vestibular disorder sufferers. If you can't help financially I would simply ask that you share this post five times, thus "Gimme Five" for sharing and raising awareness.

Vestibular Disorders Association or VEDA for short, has been instrumental in helping me better understand my disorder. So in turn I am paying it forward. VEDA has given me a lot, and now I am asking my friends , family, support group friends, social media friends to help me give a little back to an organization that has changed my life! Please give what you can, any amount will help me reach my goal, thank you in advance for your overwhelming support of me and VEDA!

To help raise awareness and show compassion to your vestibular friend, family or loved one, won't you please do the Dizzy Challenge and then learn more about our disorders and please help our cause with a small donation. Thank you very much!!!
