I am a physical therapist and clinical director with over 25 years of experience providing vestibular rehab in an outpatient physical therapy setting including symptoms related to concussion. I received certification through the APTA sponsored vestibular competency course in in 2004, 'Vestibular Rehabilitation- A Competency-Based Course' and additional certification in vestibular rehab and concussion management through the American Institute of Balance in 2019. At Lawrence Rehab Outpatient Center, repositioning maneuvers are performed for BPPV, including atypical types of BPPV. An exercise approach with adaptation, habituation and substitution exercises and a customized, patient-specific program is used to address symptoms related to dizziness and to address balance impairments. Cervical spine issues, which often coexist with vestibular impairments, are addressed with manual techniques including soft tissue work and gentle spine mobilizations as well as postural re-education. Occupational therapists on staff assist in addressing visual impairments which may be related to a concussion or vestibular diagnosis. The Neurocom Balance System and Invision Software helps us to provide objective testing and graded customized treatment.
