Vestibular Clinical Specialist Certification Denied

The American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) recently announced that it denied the Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy’s request to create a Vestibular Clinical Specialist Certification, stating that vestibular practice is a sub-specialty of neurology and not a specialty. However, there is currently no process for approval of a sub-specialty.

When vestibular patients come to VeDA for help, we strongly recommend that they find a healthcare provider with specialized training and experience diagnosing and/or treating vestibular disorders. How, they ask us, do I know if a provider has this expertise?

A Vestibular Clinical Specialist Certification would give patients the information they need to choose a physical therapist qualified to address their needs. VeDA supports the APTA’s continued efforts to pursue this certification.
