‘Dizziness’ is a common complaint. Although there are multiple aetiologies, Benign Paroxysmal Positioning Vertigo is the most frequent cause of dizziness. In the elderly, BPPV is often idiopathic, whereas in younger people it is frequently due to trauma such as concussion. BPPV can present with six different variants, but given the correct diagnosis, physical treatment is very effective and immediate. In most cases, a detailed history and clinical assessment will lead to a diagnosis and consequent resolution, using the appropriate repositioning maneuvers.

  • Revise the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system.
  • Confidently recognise and diagnose all variants of BPPV.
  • Differentiate central from peripheral vertigo and recognise ‘red flags’.
  • Outline history taking and assessment of the ‘dizzy’ patient.
  • Interpret findings and formulate differential diagnoses and their consequent intervention.
  • Competently implement therapeutic interventions such as repositioning maneuvers for each type of BPPV.
