Balance Awareness Week

Balance Awareness Week

September 13-19, 2026

What is Balance Awareness Week?

VeDA (Vestibular Disorders Association) launched Balance Awareness Week (BAW) in 1997 to bring attention to invisible balance disorders. Since then, it has grown into a global movement to educate, advocate, and build community for people living with vestibular disorders.

Why Do We Need Balance Awareness Week?

Balance Awareness Week is important because it shines a spotlight on vestibular disorders—conditions that are common, often disabling, and frequently misunderstood or misdiagnosed. These conditions aren't visible from the outside, but they can affect every aspect of a person's life. Without greater awareness, too many people face delayed diagnoses, limited access to care, and the feeling that no one understands what they're going through. That's why your support is so important. Together, we can help more people find answers, access trusted resources, and know they are not alone.

Together, we can support individuals battling dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance as they strive for a life rebalanced.

Why Participate in Balance Awareness Week?

  1. Raise Awareness: Help make vestibular disorders visible by educating others about these conditions and their impacts.
  2. Support Research and Resources: Your participation and donations enable VeDA to fund critical research, provide valuable resources, and offer support to those affected.
  3. Global Impact: By joining our efforts, you become part of a worldwide movement to raise awareness and support for vestibular disorders.

Take the 10-Second Balance Challenge

Help others understand how much we rely on balance every day

For Balance Awareness Week, we’re challenging people without vestibular disorders to stand on one foot, cross their arms, close their eyes, and see if they can make it to 10 seconds.

Challenge a friend, family member, coworker, or healthcare provider to:

  1. Stand on one foot with their arms crossed.
  2. Close their eyes.
  3. Try to stay balanced for 10 seconds.
  4. Film their attempt and share it on social media using #BalanceAwarenessWeek.
  5. Tag three people to take the challenge next.

Share the challenge with the people in your life and encourage them to post their attempts using  #BalanceAwarenessWeek. The more people who participate, the more people we can reach with the message that balance is something many of us rely on without ever thinking about it.

Healthcare professionals: Take the challenge and invite your colleagues, followers, and community to participate. You can also use the challenge as an opportunity to start conversations about vestibular health and the experiences of your patients.

Safety first: Anyone taking the challenge should stand near a wall, sturdy chair, countertop, or someone who can provide support. People with vestibular disorders, balance problems, dizziness, or other conditions that could make the challenge unsafe should not attempt it.

A 10-second challenge can’t capture what it’s like to live with a vestibular disorder, but it can help someone else begin to understand.
