Just joined this forum because the numbness I've been experiencing is driving me crazy!  I've got it all on one side (left).  Hand, foot and also lips and tip of tongue, sometimes left ear and nose).  Lips and tongue feel like when you eat something and have an allergic reaction, that kind of tingling, or when you get pain meds during dental work and the numbness is wearing off.  Foot feels numb from bottom of toes to top of toes, that portion of the foot top and bottom. It is the entire hand, feels very stiff and I keep stretching my hand trying to get rid of it (doesn't work).  No issues while I sleep.

Here's my story (I'll try to be as concise as possible) -

1st Moderna shot March 12, 2021

2nd April 9, 2021

In between these shots (which were in my right arm as I am left handed), I started experiencing what I thought was a return of cubital tunnel syndrome in my left pinkie which quickly progressed to involving my entire left hand, the worst of it being after touring around Boston in a freezing cold wet day in May.

June 21 visit orthopedic, tell him my symptoms (including I had had cubital tunnel YEARS ago but this seemed "more involved"), does some testing (strength, can I feel this or that, etc), he does an XRAY, shows nothing except some arthritis under left thumb (which explained why it had been feeling stiff for a while).  Tells me it most likely was cubital tunnel back (even though it was more involved?) advises an EMG (which he admits can be inconclusive for cubital tunnel), appointment scheduled for July 22. I find out that this will cost me $400+ even with my insurance.  I decide to get a second opinion but from a neurologist.  I feel like I led him to say it was cubital tunnel by telling him I'd had it in the past.

August 9 visit neurologist, tell him my symptoms but do NOT tell him I had cubital tunnel or about an EMG.  Tell him I had been to an orthopedic but I wanted a second opinion.  He does more extensive tests for strength and feeling.  Asks if I have problems with my neck or do I have pain.  No not really.  I've had issues in past with my back, he tells me that would not explain hand.  Advises an EMG and an MRI of cervical spine.  At that point I ask about the EMG and what is the probability that it would find a reason for the numbness.  He also thinks it would probably be inconclusive, says just go for the MRI.

August 10/11 insurance denies MRI.  by this time, my hand numbness which had started sometime in March/April (but only started to be more often after that cold day in May) was not the only numbness.  I now had numbness in my left foot, my lips, tip of my tongue and left ear (not as often).  Call the dr, advise that I now have this and perhaps he could relay that to the insurance company when he does the requested (by me) peer to peer review to get the MRI approved.

August 15 family emergency and I fly out of state and the entire 3 hour plane ride, the numbness in my hand, foot, etc is the worst it's been and continues.

August 30 MRI was finally approved and I had the MRI cervical spine.  Dr tells me it shows some normal aging (I'm in my 50s) with C6-C7. I ask could it be a pinched nerve causing this numbness?  Tells me could explain the hand numbness but not the foot or the lips, tongue.

I push for an answer, he suggests and MRI of brain to rule out some things (i.e. cancer, MS and I don't want to know what else bad).

September 8 MRI brain w/without contrast

September 10 - results, dr says everything comes back good (hurray) but I STILL have this numbness. What is the path forward to finding relief?

September 14 -  visit doctor, still doesn't know what is causing, I ask B12 deficiency?  Covid vaccine side effect?  Maybe this from my Cervical spine MRI report that he said was just normal aging:

C6-C7: Multifactorial moderate canal stenosis, effacing the CSF surrounding the cord and mildly flattening the cord.
High-grade right and moderate left foraminal stenosis.
C5-C6: There is multifactorial mild to moderate canal stenosis partially effacing the CSF and abutting the right ventral
cord. Mild to moderate left and mild right foraminal stenosis. Faint edematous endplate change.

No, wouldn't explain all that numbness.  Perhaps my back issues that I had in the past with herniated disc, bulging disc, stenosis, etc?  No.  Dr tells me that this type of numbness without pain is hard to diagnose. Orders EMG (back to square one!).  I ask will this reveal the reason for the numbness, he tells me most likely no.

September 30 - EMG appointment

I've been pushing off friends who told me months ago that other people were having side effects like this with covid vaccine but now I'm beginning to wonder what is going on?!

I asked the dr about B12 and he didn't seem to think it was an issue (also, coincidentally, my 79 year old mother, who has been complaining of numbness in her left foot for months- who had surgery for blocked arteries in her left leg just had an EMG and it showed nerve damage and HER doctor is wanting her to go for blood test to rule out B12 or immune issue)

Any advice on what to do if the EMG shows nothing?

Maybe a weird question, does somebody here also get nodules, beside the tingling/electric sensation? I found several nodules(or lumps) on my upper leg left and right, and lower back.. I am not sure if this related to the vaccin, but I started to worry about it..

After 4 months (5.5 months post 2nd Moderna) of many different symptoms they seem to be tapering off, yet still there. Buzzing and twitching, burning eye gone and also daytime tinnitus but still dealing with slight burning sensations anywhere on body and very minor numbness in left lower leg/foot that comes and goes. I don't know if it makes any difference but I'm giving blood as often as possible to reduce antibodies and clear out WBC that may contain s-proteins or fragments of proteins.

Pins and needles have subsided along with the numbness but now i have some weird symptoms going on. My face feels as if it was “sunburned” along with other parts of my body! Wtf is going on!! How long or worse is this going to get? seems like every week it’s a new symptom! My body feels extremely sore, i have muscle pains, sometimes my fingers feel “tight” have y’all ever put a rubber band around your finger or hand and you get that tight throbbing feeling? (I used to do that as a kid) well that’s exactly how my fingers feel! Anyone else?

@nawpan how are you now? I got my shot a week ago.  Still have tingling and twitching in my feet, legs and some in my torso. Got the Moderna shot #1 on 9/3. Perfectly healthy female age 51. I know it’s the vaccine.

Hi there

I still have buzzing sensation on my legs arms and feet.  What worry me is internal vibration that started about 6-7 weeks after the vaccination. I still have it. I do hope it goes away soon though.  My doctor said nerves take long to heal.

@nawpan I have the same thing one week out. Has yours improved? I got Moderna.

Well yes most symptoms are gone but I still have buzzing sensation and internal vibration that worry me.   I had EMG test and MRI scans and none of them show anything wrong with my nerves.  My doctor will refer me to covid/vaccine specialists.

@nawpan how long have you had symptoms? I’m praying yours goes away. There are vaccine specialists? I talked to Moderna and they had no information to help me. They said their studies are ongoing and that the 1st and 2nd study don’t finish until the end of this year and that study 3 with 30,000 people in it won’t end until fall of next year.

  • I'm almost 8 months post vaccine.  one week post Moderna, second being on left side, I developed numbness and tingling across torso/back to left hand.  This symptom still persists.  Involuntary movement of L thumb and L eye twitching which resolved several weeks after.  Was already seeing a neurologist to diagnose BEUM- benign episodic unilateral midriasis.  Happened to be getting MRI after vaccine which showed a new lesion on cervical spinal cord and was diagnosed with Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis.  Lumbar puncture was normal and had no markers for MS, bloodwork negative for other demyliniation diseases.  Yet, the numbness and tingling persist. Have been pretty much gluten and dairy free, anti inflammatory diet etc...(though admittedly cheat occasionally). ..taking multi v, vit D, omega 3...
  • I also have persistent mid back pain in what I think is the  deep lumborum muscle and have considered that some may be pinched nerve...BUT HOW TO KNOW????  Very frustrated.

I don’t know exactly what they called but they help people with adverse side effects from the vaccines (that what I understand from what my doctor mentioned).  I have had adverse side effects for about 3.5 months now.  Thanks for praying for me :-).  I really want these symptoms to go away and I hope yours are going away as well.

Dear All,

I am approaching the end of the 8th week post 2nd Pfizer vaccine. I can finally say that I am feeling normal again. Pins and needles started to subside around week 6 and in the last 10 days I hardly ever felt them. I hope this gives hope to at least some of you!

I had weeks of paresthesia after both vaccine doses. It was particularly bad and distressing after the 2nd dose. I felt it in limbs, back, neck... at some point it was so bad I had burning sensation allover my body. I also had restless leg.

I did countless tests and checks and doctor/ER visits... Some doctors said it might indeed be a vaccine side effect but nobody can know for sure for the time being, others said it is unlikely...

The good part of it is that I got a really comprehensive medical checkup in the process, discovered small health issues that need to be addressed, and got reassurance that my general health is ok.

The bad part is that this whole experience put me through hell emotionally and I developed health anxiety disorder and sleep disorder that now I need to address with psycho and physio therapy and with medication. I think some of the symptoms were reinforced by anxiety and at some point I got into a hell of a vicious circle.

But I start to see the end of the tunnel, and I feel blessed to live in a country with a strong and accessible medical system that helped me a lot through this whole crisis.

I wish you all lots of strength!

@stela this is wonderful news!  I am in week 6 now and after about 3-4 days of feeling somewhat normal I am experiencing a flare up again. I have very similar symptoms to what you described.

Are you to a point now that regardless of what you are doing, exercising, warm shower, etc., you are not experiencing any flare ups? If so that would feel incredible and I really look forward to that day!!

@eileenwh Hang in there! I think that going to see a neurologist is a smart move. He/she will do exams and tests to rule out serious neurological or neuromuscular issues (and treat them if necessary). And it's likely that any milder neurological issues will gradually subside. Seeing a neurologist gave me peace of mind, as he ruled out serious conditions that I was worried about, and reassured me that my symptoms should improve in time. However, it's important to be aware that inflamed or damaged nerves (even small nerve fibers) can take many months to settle down and heal. It is also possible to experience periods where the symptoms calm a bit, and then relapse, before you start seeing longer periods of improvement. In the meantime, keep taking good care of yourself, and definitely consult with a neurologist to evaluate your ongoing progress.
